Digital Mess

This problem could easily become an epidemic.  Why is no one trying to tackle this head on?  I guess it is because our digital space is very personal and difficult to manage.  What I mean by “digital” is pictures, mp3s, email, address book, videos, calender, and throw in the plethora of social networks you may belong to.  Personally with over 6000 digital photos and nearly as many songs this issue is becoming a personal headache.

Organization is very important these days, especially living in a small space.  I don’t necessarily have a problem with my physical space, but my digital and virtual space is driving me ABSOLUTELY crazy.  Why when I turn to my IPOD will i have fourteen different tags for the same artist, all spelled in a slightly different fashion?  Why when I go to call someone do I have two different mobile numbers and three different entries?  Then you have the whole idea of keeping current on facebook/myspace/LinkedIn which is a whole new challenge in itself.  I feel that if I don’t take a firm grasp of this situation soon it will get beyond repair.  How great would it be to be able to simply block a couple days to tackle this issue.  For most, that isn’t an option though.

I was curious if there are any sort of retreat type weekends to allow people to regain control of this.  Not necessarily because I want to go, but because I imagine they would be highly popular.  A couple days of dedicated time to clean up this aspect of your life.  There are services that help people organize their homes. I know because I have a Sister who does this and understand there are tons of franchises popping up around this very issue.  As our digital and virtual worlds expand rapidly, it will become important, at least for us overly organized (anal), to grab a hold before its too late.
